Survivor

The mirror holds the key,
Evidence of change.
Where there once was no sign of hair...
Beautiful curly hair is there.
Where there once was a frown...
a smiling face appears.
A woman with a heart so alive and healthy,
Stares into this piece of glass.
She knows it's time for celebration,
her battle is won.
You see...
This beautiful and awesome woman,
one of many diagnosed with breast cancer,
is a part of me.
She's a survivor and a fighter,
she's the reason my family bleeds pink...
She's my mom.

From the October 1st Hope Chests Meeting

Seize the day and live it to the fullest having a heart that is full of optimism and a soul that perseveres and a body that endures. Let us care for ourselves and others. Let's give others a helping hand by encouraging and supporting them in their walk, trusting that one day there will be a cure. But until that time, let us share the knowledge we have gained by our personal walk. We are survivors!

The diagnosis of cancer can create a sense of uncertainty and separation for many patients and their family members. Adapting to the challenges brought about by having breast cancer can be difficult. Often times, our ability to cope may be enhanced through sharing and identifying with others in similar situations. Hope Chests is an educational/support network that is led and organized by patients. The program is used to inform, encourage, and meet the needs of breast cancer patients and their family members.

Each month, opportunities for education are offered by inviting speakers who are knowledgeable in the field of interest chosen by the group. Emotional support is achieved through group member interaction and group exercises that promote ventilation of feelings and fears.
